Supporting Those Less Fortunate
Food and Toys Drive, December 1 through December 15. The Embankment Clubs are getting together to contribute to the Wandsworth Food Bank. The food bank drive initiative is led by Thames, and the toy drive by London for Salvation Army Wandsworth.
Boxes will be placed in the rowers entrance area, please contribute if you are able. The following food items are currently the most needed: Sponge Puddings (long-life), Tinned Custard, Tinned Rice Pudding, Nuts, Cheese Biscuits, Sweet Biscuits (small packs best), Ketchup/Mayonnaise, Honey, Cooking Oil (small), Loo Roll (2 or 4 packs), Hot Water Bottles.
The following is recommended for children: 0-3 years: Dolls, teddy bears, cot mobiles, baby clothes, bath toys, CDs of suitable music and nursery rhymes, puzzles; 3-5: Dolls and action figures, cars, lorries, DVDs and CDs (music and nursery rhymes), colouring sets, pencils, crayons, books, puzzles; 5-9: Educational games & toys, stationery (colouring sets, pencils, crayons, school sets), CDs & family friendly DVDs, books, puzzles, wordsearch, crosswords; 9-12: Games and toys, stationery, DVDs, books, t-shirts, hair accessories, gloves, scarves, hats; 13-16: Books, make-up and toiletries (please try to ensure non-allergic ingredients if possible), gloves, scarves, hats, t-shirts, hair accessories and gift vouchers
LRC donations will be delivered to the recipients on Christmas VIII’s day, Sunday 15th December.
Mike Williams honoured with a Distinguished Service to International Rowing award
This is an announcement…
We would like to congratulate our Vice-President, Mike Williams on being awarded the Distinguished Service to International Rowing award at the World Rowing Awards dinner evening held in London on Monday, 23 November 2019.
As a long-serving members of the FISA Council and FISA Executive, Mike has contributed exceptional time, knowledge and experience to rowing, and has served as the FISA treasurer.

Boat Naming, Saturday 13th April 2019
Bill Baker writes…
Members are invited to join family and friends for the naming of the new Empacher coxless 4 after John Cooney on Saturday 13th April at 3pm. Tea and cake will be offered in the Long Room, with other beverages available.
John died on 21 March 2018 aged 54 after a long struggle with lymphoma. He was part of the successful heavy and lightweight squads at LRC in the 1990s finishing 6th for LRC 1 at the 1992 Head. He was selected for the first Head eight the following year but was disappointed to pull out on the morning with illness.
He rowed in the 1994 lightweight London crew that represented England in the Commonwealth Regatta in London Ontario winning gold ahead of Australia, silver and Canada, bronze. Earlier that year the same crew won open and lightweight eights at the National Championships at Nottingham, their time of 5.43 the lightweight record for the event to date.
John loved rowing and LRC was especially close to his heart. A party animal, he made a big impression on all who knew him. He contributed hugely to the club with his humour and larger-than-life personality. His interests extended well beyond rowing – he was a self-taught guitarist, elite level cyclist, filmmaker, keen motorcyclist and car enthusiast. He threw himself into life with gusto and an infectious enthusiasm.
He would be absolutely thrilled to know that an LRC boat bears his name.

John Russell
We were sorry to learn about the recent passing of John Russell, who was a member of the Club at the end of the 1950s. He won the Wingfield Sculls under London colours in 1959, as well as the London Cup at the Met the same year. He went on to row at international level in the early 1960s after moving to other clubs. A fuller account of his career will follow soon.
His funeral is taking place at Aldershot Crematorium on Friday 22nd February at 12 noon.
