London's performance at Henley Royal Regatta

LRC enjoyed mixed results at this year's Henley which ended on Sunday 2 July 2017.

Wyfold Challenge Cup

London's 'B' four were the fastest non-qualifiers in what was probably the most competitive event at the Regatta.

The 'A' four - the Club's top boat and a selected crew - battled to hard-fought wins on the Wednesday and Thursday before succumbing to a tough Australian crew on the Friday.

Thames Challenge Cup

Two crews were required to go through the Qualifiers.  London 'C' just missed out, but London's 'B' eight did qualify and won their first race against Nottingham & Union, before going out to a strong Oslo crew on the Thursday.

The 'A' eight, who were also a selected crew, suffered sickness on the eve of the Regatta, and lost narrowly to a fine Agecroft crew in the first round, in one of the fastest times of the event this year.  Agecroft went on to the semi-finals.

Visitors' Challenge Cup

Sadly, London's four were no match for Taurus, who beat them quite convincingly in the heats.

Ladies' Challenge Plate

Will Geffen was London's sole representative in the Molesey & LRC composite eight which contested this event, rowing in the bow seat.  They reached the final, but were narrowly defeated by the Oxford Brookes & Taurus composite in a time just short of the record.

Six LRC crews entered for Henley Royal Regatta

London Rowing Club has six crews entered for this year's Henley Royal Regatta starting on Wednesday 28 June 2017.  We have 3 eights entered for the Thames Challenge Cup, 2 fours in the Wyfold Challenge Cup, and another four entered for the Visitors' Challenge Cup.  We also have representation in a composite eight with Molesey in the Ladies' Challenge Plate, and in a composite with Fulham Reach in the Remenham Challenge Cup.  We wish success to all our crews.

Two of the Thames Cup eights and one of the Wyfold fours will be hoping to qualify through the Qualification Races on Friday 23 June.

Here are pen portaits of some of these crews:

Wyfold A: 

Dom Parnell – Dom has surpassed his older brother Nick as the dominant Parnell this year. Those boys love a good wrestle and Dom now sits firmly on top. Dom brings a steady beat to the race along with is steady foot. Mr Reliable

Steve Griffiths  – New to LRC this year, Stephen is your quintessential British rower. Refined, meticulous and a posh accent to match that would wouldn’t go amiss at Queens Lizzy’s Dinner table. Steve brings class to party.

Nick Parnell  – Now firmly sat behind in his brothers and Steve’s pasty shadows. Nick is like a Werewolf in the full moon and brings his aggression out to race time. Really gives you the kick you need when you think you’ve got nothing left.

Matt Cummings – The Bow man. The man no boat can go without. When the goings gets tough, the tough get going. And oh my, does this man go. Like a horse drawn cart this boat is pulled along by the bow, not pushed. The often forgotten man in the boat, provides the calls, organization and the hard graft behind the scenes.

Wyfold B: The Good Lads Four

Having agreed that Matt Cummings had tried really hard this year, The Good Lads Four declined the ‘A’ boat status and now look to set up an all London final on Sunday 2nd. What this crew lack in erg scores they make up in chat and cheese jokes and will be found living the dream on their yacht moored in Henley this summer.

Stroke – James Sexton-Barrow  A club record signing last summer, James comes to London from Vesta. Having decided that blue was more his colour James cemented his place in rowing’s hall of fame early this season by competing in the Parliamentary Boat Race and earning a nice hat. A big fan of a rowing spreadsheet and race data collection, James says meeting Fat Sculler would be a boyhood dream come true.

Three – Luis Orozco  Living proof that with Brexit looming we should now be looking to the Commonwealth to find our imported talent. Though he won’t be propping up the NHS, Canadian Luis will be propping up the crew, fearful that a poor performance at Henley could see him loose his citizenship. Luis also has a girlfriend who rows at UL.

Two – Jack Davidson  When asked how much weight he can squat, Jack’s answer was “all of it”. This impressive performance in the gym makes up for his tiny hands, for which Jack uses a ‘special grip’ on his oar handle. Despite this abnormality Jack has no problem with the ladies having recently become the face of Hackett’s Henley sponsorship. Ladies, if you’re interested, Jack is now available on all good dating apps.

Bow (steers) – Rupert Price  Still bitter about getting rowed through by Brazil at the U23 World Champs, Rupert took last summer’s Rio games as a personal ‘up yours’ and decided to come out of retirement. Having spent a year training solidly to seek revenge, this ex Cambridge lightweight is still the heaviest man in the boat.

Thames Cup A

Charlotte Fuscone - Cox  Charly the brain of the outfit and uses her size and presence to dominate the crew, bending them to her will. Her coxing learnt from the hard streets of Oxford, she is used to the rough and tumble of the bumps – and as such, the tideway has nothing she cannot handle. Her lines are savage and her calls deadly, with Charly the quickest path to victory is assured.

Rory Corbett - Stroke  Rory or DC (Daddy Corbett), as he is more commonly known, is our rhythmic stroke-man. Being the oldest- I mean - veteran in the boat, he brings a wealth of experience to the fore with his dulcet Irish tones. Providing soothing words of encouragement to our cox, his words gently waft their way down to the bow, filling everyone with joy. Having done some rowing in his heyday (Former Irish Junior), DC is keen to relive his lost youth and lead us to Henley glory!

Lord George Trelawny – 7 seat  George is our freckled ginger fresh faced number 7. Recently from Radley, he kept his head down for the first half of the season in classic school-boy style, sniffing out the weakest link before coming out of his shell and providing witty one-liners, crushing many with his barbed tongue (also used to great effect on the lower forms during his school days…..). Big red (so named for his passionate love of Jeremy Corbyn) unites the boat as only a true comrade can.

Christopher Linn – 6 Seat  Chris, having suffered many humiliations years previously, decided to leave Vesta and join his betters here at London. Considering himself the engine room of the team, he lays down the watts in the middle of the boat. Known for his calm and serene temperament, you never hear his voice raised in anger. Much like a serene Gorilla with back hair to match, Chris is a valuable asset, trusted to put his all into every race.

Matthew Piechowicz – 5 Seat  Matt our five-man, having overcome his cookie addiction from the previous year, has now moved on to stronger stimulants and is never seen far from a coffee house. When not shooting espressos, he can be found lurking in the London Resis, labelling his food and polishing his bike. In the boat, Matt is no slouch - he can be witnessed hooooning the boat, experiencing high levels of discomfort sacrificed for speed.

Nick Adams – 4 Seat  Nick has found his way to us from the Solent, regaling us nonstop about his Southampton Uni boat club days. Nick is another London Resis who has a large appetite but surprisingly low food bill. Beloved by all of the coaching staff, Nick is the very definition of positivity and optimism in the boat. No crew too tough, no session too hard, his glass is always half full brimming with a can-do attitude. But you would not know what a big dog he is, as he is often pulling so hard in the boat he can barely even make a noise.

Jooooossssssshhhhhhh – 3 Seat  Picked out as an example of catch preparation by the coaching staff, Josh is the model rower. A bearded hero... no more words are needed.

Aidan O’Flaherty – 2 Seat  Aidan is our second Irishman in the boat (this is why I voted out #Brexit - Ed). With a honed physique that would not be out of place in ancient Greece (which he uses to devastating effect on other crew members housemates) Aidan is the erg-monkey of the boat; lifting the bows out of the water sending the rhythm back up the boat, whether we like it or not. A useful addition to the crew, he also has magic hands which can rub away all aches and pains that we often have… or say we have.

William Golding - Bow  Will, or Little G, is the technical wizard at bow. Originally from the deep dark North, he is our token Geordie.  In addition, his ginger hair aids our crew diversity! When not being the sharpest tool in the boat, Little G can be found undercover at Thames undermining their junior section, coaching a unique way to row. From bow, he has a great view of our blade work - adding to the benefits of having a coach in the boat. He is often found sobbing at the end of sessions at the sheer technical proficiency he has witnessed from the bow.  

 Thames Cup B

Crew description: The “Commonwealth Boat”, not even Brexit can get rid of these guys (except Lucas) and their fat ergos.

Kim “Kimbo Slice” Wilkinson  Kimbo Slice is pound for pound the toughest member of this year’s Thames Challenge Cup crew. Much like the street fighter turned MMA star, Kimbo isn’t afraid to take out anyone in her path. Formerly coxing for Bath University, Kim was sought after by LRC both for her ferocious coxing ability and happy-go-lucky on land personality. Driving the big boys boat into Henley, Kim plans on keeping the boys fuelled with her baking abilities.

Lucas “Muffin Man” Vitale  Antique wheeler dealer by day, Lucas “Muffin Man” Vitale, is the first of our international athletes, bringing his French flair and lightning legs to the stroke seat. This is his second season competing for London, where he is now famous for his final war cry, which puts fear into the hearts of all who hear it and transcends all language barriers. Usually known for his stylish tendencies, his Henley moustache has received mixed reviews, but ultimately the extra speed it brings is what matters most to this dedicated athlete. Listen out for this guy as he comes down the enclosures.

Seb Thomas  The most laidback member of the crew. He plays a key role, translating the Frenchy rhythm into English and taking his stroke man’s princessy demands in his stride. He’s always working to educate the crew, sharing informative pictures and videos. When not rowing, Seb spends his time pursuing his dream of becoming Don Draper and releasing his creative side.

Woody Sandhu  At six we have Woody, everyone’s favourite chopstick, who has the cool head necessary to lead out the Kiwi trio behind him. The tallest member of the crew at 6’9’’, Coach Downie frequently points out what a lanky b****** he is. Some may think all that limb length would make him a little uncoordinated, but rest assured, this guy still knows how to move - just keep a distance of 2m at all times on the dance floor.

Tom “Big Dawg” Monaghan  Our first chap from our Kiwi Triad, Tom’s exceptionally long and shapely calves add elegance (and power) to the middle four meat pack. The keenest member of the crew, this guy is always up for going for a pull and never shies away from the hard work. He’s in England for an “Overseas Experience” so please feel free to come over, introduce yourself and teach him about your culture.

Jamie “Ginge” Saunders  Second member of the Kiwi Triad and the oldest member of the crew. Ginge is thoroughly enjoying retirement, which gives him more time for rowing, watching sport and napping with the dog. Always willing to share his wisdom with the boys (and Kim), don’t be deceived by the cuddly hipster look and bushy moustache, this man once fought off fierce competition to become the fastest club sculler in New Zealand.

Todd “T. O. Double” Hale Third member of the Kiwi Triad, a man of few words.  Me Todd, me row.

Dylan Wing  Raised in the wilderness on a diet of maple syrup, Dylan is our lone Canadian. In a previous life this big kid was a basketball star, a road cyclist and, last but not least, a speed skater (he’s retained his love of horrifyingly tight clothing). Thankfully he’s settled with rowing and is one half of our bow pair power couple - forged in the fires of Varese, their bond is unbreakable.

Matt Reeder  The other half of our bow pair power couple - Matthew Reeder, our technician in the bow seat, is on a mission to win a Henley medal in order to prove that “vegans can do anything”. It’s hard to believe a man who lives off of tree nuts and chickpeas can lay down such savage amounts of watts. In his free time Matt enjoys lounging in his hammock on the resis balcony and riding his bike, so long as the water he hydrates with doesn’t harm the habitat of the aquatic life.

London crews perform strongly at the Met


LRC had a successful weekend at the Metropolitan Regatta (3-4 June 2017), with our best results for a few years.

London's Wyfold A crew finished third in the Championship Coxless Fours event on both Saturday and Sunday to Leander and Edinburgh University, neither of whom would be eligible for the Wyfold Challenge Cup at Henley. London beat all other eligible club boats.

Our Thames Challenge Cup A eight finished 6th in the Championship Eights event on Saturday and were not too far off the pace, racing a gutsy race the whole way through. On Sunday the Oxford Brookes contingent rolled up and bumped our guys out of the A final into the B final where London finished 5th in a tight race. Considering there were a total of nine finals in the event, finishing 5th in the B final was a good result.

LRC new gym - Update May 2017




To build a first class strength and conditioning land training facility befitting LRC to assist in attracting high calibre club oarsmen and oarswomen to represent LRC racing at the highest competitive level.

To offer members and athletes of all ages an environment with the best opportunities for improving their physical abilities.

To use the new gym and released function space upstairs to create a revenue stream to assist and support LRC’s financial position and future.




Selection and appointment of Gym Build Sub Committee (detailed at end).

Secured and raised c£280,000 - sufficient to build the new gym, men’s changing room and showers but not sufficient to cover cost of fitting out with new equipment. Until additional funds are raised existing gym equipment, including ergos, watt bikes and weights, and existing lockers and benches for men’s changing, will need to be reused.

Planning permission obtained, structural design and external and internal architectural design completed.

Build tendered to three contractors, shortlisted to two.

Aim to complete the tender process and start works in July post Henley to ensure squad focus remains on racing with completion September/October 2017.

Arrangements for changing during the summer currently being made with local clubs.



Your Gym Build subcommittee was appointed and has been working hard on the project and can report the following progress:

Layout of the New Space

Complete redevelopment of the whole area behind the entrance to the men's changing room (i.e. the whole of the area occupied currently by the existing men’s changing room, tank and gym).

The full ground level will be used for the new gym facilities.

The existing rowing tank will be left in situ and covered with a false floor.

A new first floor level will be added for new men’s changing facilities.

Access to the men’s changing rooms will be via the internal stairs which lead currently to the women’s changing room.

The new gym will have a separate access and will be well insulated, heated and dry.

With the basics in place we will be able to invest in high quality training equipment without fear it will deteriorate because of the conditions.

The Past Six Months.…Planning and Preparation

Since July 2016, your Gym Subcommittee has worked hard to plan and prepare for the project with the key aims of ensuring we have a tight specification and the right contract with the right builder at the right price. To achieve this we have:

1) Questioned, clarified, developed and refined the architect’s drawings

2) Worked with our structural engineers Fothergill and Co. to develop and finalise the structural drawings

3) Prepared detailed specifications

4) Engaged with three contractors

5) Prepared a request for best and final offers from two shortlisted contractors.

Progress has been steady and has enabled us to ensure that the Club spends its members’ money to best effect. We now believe we are in a position to move forward with the first phase of work.Schedule / Timing

We are currently in the process of going back to two preferred contractors to secure their best and final offers for the works based on updated architectural and engineering drawings as well as a detailed specification. We expect to be in a position to award a contract by the end of May.

The exact start date on site will be agreed with the successful tenderer during our final contract negotiations. We are hoping for a start date following Henley and we are aiming for completion ready for the start of the next season. We will keep everyone updated.

The major disruption during the build period has been planned to coincide with the summer months when the requirement for land based strength and conditioning work is less and when the level of rowing activity at the club is at its lowest. For efficiency in both time and money we will hand the site over to the contractor giving the contractor free access to get on with the work. This will leave us without a gym, men’s changing room and men’s showers. Nonetheless our rowing programme will continue.

We are currently making arrangements to be able to use changing facilities at adjacent clubs and will find space in LRC to house ergometers and some weights. Further details will be provided nearer to the time.

Those with lockers will be offered a refund for the duration of limited availability – there will of course be the option to maintain your subscription donating to gym funds.

Funding Position

This is important. We have raised a significant amount but still have more to do.

To date, we have raised c£280,000.

This includes a very generous bequest from our former President Peter Coni OBE of £90,000, and a very generous grant from the Fairbairn Trust of £75,000, secured thanks to our President, Mike Baldwin, to whom we are very grateful.

The balance has been raised through generous member donations for which the club is very grateful indeed, and from fundraising events including LRC's Olympians Dinner and Auction, Great London Row 2016 and Quiz Nights.

The funds raised to date are sufficient to build the new gym, men’s changing room and showers but until additional funds are raised we would need to use the existing gym equipment including ergos, watt bikes and weights and the existing lockers and benches.

Our ability to complete the project with the standard of fit out and new equipment that we would like to deliver to our current and future members remains dependant on our topping up funding.

We are able to start the structural works and basic fit out with our current secured funds. We will not yet, however, be able to complete the fit out to the level we would wish and equip the gym with the best in class equipment identified.

By raising funds for the capital works and controlling our costs we are seeking to avoid taking out any loans which would require interest payments to be met for years to come.

The VAT position has been investigated and VAT will be payable on the works.What Can I Do To Help?

Thank you for asking...there is still plenty to do and we can all support the project in various ways. Here are a few suggestions. Please do whatever you can.

1) Give generously to the Appeal Fund

2) Support the range of activities being run by the Fund Raising

3) Support the Working Groups which will be required to clear out the changing rooms, gym and tank room ahead of the contract works

4) Encourage your crewmates past and present to support the Club to deliver this transformational development.

The Best Use of Our Space Going Forward

We will move all ergometers, watt bikes and other training paraphernalia from the upstairs Crew room into the new gym and return the Crew room to its original purpose, for which it has hardly been used. The original purpose of the Crew room was to offer additional social facilities and the ability to hire out this area (as we do successfully with the Long Room, Fairbairn Room and Members' Room) to help generate revenue. Those who generously contributed to that build will be pleased to see it re-instated for that use.

Our new gym space will lend itself to additional revenue opportunities. It will be appealing for occasional, non conflicting rental to specially selected partners or schools, thereby contributing to its running costs in future years.



Great London Row 2017 on 6-7 May 

After the Great London Row last year, a number of those who took part told us how much they enjoyed it, and they wanted to do it again, particularly on the reaches further up the Thames which they would never otherwise row on. So now we have the Great London Row 2017, a chance for all section of the Club, active and less so, to get out on the water together, and all join in a barbeque on Sunday.

With a gym to build, last year's event was a fund-raiser, and very successful at that. This year's is more of a "fun-raiser" - but we still have to put a gloss on the gym-building fund, so we still are asking a smaller contribution to take part. Do just that, and enjoy!"

The Great London Row 2017 

This second annual Club wide row will take place on Saturday 6th May and Sunday 7th May  in your choice of three courses, all culminating in a Club barbecue for participants, family and friends on the Sunday afternoon from 3pm.

This row is for the whole of LRC past and present.

For those who row regularly - for those who once did - as well as former LRC members  - especially those who left some sweat in our soon to be replaced gym - this is everyone's opportunity  to row with your friends alongside other members of our Club.

We are asking a small contribution which will go to the gym rebuild - minimum £25 per seat.  Another chance for you to help to secure LRC's future achievements on the water and to have some good fun.

The three courses to choose from are:

Course One

Dorney to LRC - 34 miles over Saturday 6th May and Sunday 7th May.

            Saturday 6th May - Boating from Dorney at an early but civilised time.  Through Windsor, Runnymeade, Staines onto Hampton Court.  Boats left overnight Saturday in Thames Ditton area.


            Sunday 7th May - Depart from Thames Ditton area midday, though you may wish to depart earlier and stop for lunch along the way. Row through Kingston, Teddington, Twickenham and Richmond, then onto our own stretch of water to LRC for 3pm ish arrival for the barbeque.


Course Two

Hampton Court to LRC - 16 miles . Depart Hampton Court on midday  Sunday 7th May, though you may wish to depart earlier and stop for lunch.  Land at LRC by Sunday 3pm-ish to shower and change for the Barbeque.

Course Three


Boat Race Course Reversed - Chiswick departure, suggested boating at 1:30pm. Finish at LRC before 3pm to shower and change for the Barbeque.
