London Rowing Club - Social

Annual Dinner

Friday the 23rd February saw LRC celebrate their annual dinner. It was the first dinner at the club since the start of the redevelopment, although guests would hardly have noticed as Dom as his team had worked their magic. The head table included guest speakers Robin Williams and ‘Artist to LRC’ – Theodore Ramos. The table also included some of the spoils of the 2006 season. Including the Thames Cup (Henley), The Vernon Trophy (Head of the River) and the Boustead Cup, a reminder perhaps of the clubs successes and also the highest of standards of performance it sets for itself. It was fitting that Robin Williams (former head coach and international oarsman), talked in his speech of the physical hardships in the LRC gym being the foundation for success of the water. Captain Tom Killick also paid tribute to the coaching staff that makes LRC’s success possible, with Head Coach Paul Reedy receiving a standing ovation for his efforts at the club.

As London two-man Phil Beard commented afterwards “the dinner was a really great experience for us. London is clearly a great club and we look forward to building further success”.

Visit of the Patron Prince Phillip

In the end the rain stopped, the wind died and conditions were perfect for the visit of HRH Prince Phillip to London Rowing Club. There was the whole squad on the water, as well as the world champion lightweight VIII from 1979 and the 2004 Thames cup winning crew. The 2004 crew were boated in the newly christened "Edinburgh". The Prince was afloat in Cassamajor and each crew in turn rowed past raising their rate in salute to the Patron of the club.

Once safely off the water the Prince was introduced to the committee and then the "most experienced picture unveiler in the world" revealed the new painting by Theodore Ramos. This was made possible by the kind donation of the 6's and 7's club. The Prince was also presened with a copy of "Water Boiling Aft", a history of London Rowing Club by Chris Dodd. The Prince then made a short speech and then spoke with many members of the club.

This was a fantastic evening for the club and massively enjoyed by everyone who attended. Thankyou to Dom, Jo, Jacqui and their team for their great work on Thursday in organising the catering, and Julian Ebsworth, Chris Sprague and the other members of the 150th committee who worked tirelessly to prepare the club for the reception.
