Munich World Cup

Munich World Cup, Day 1

The first day of the Munich World Cup began with very windy conditions making for tough going and slow times. Four LRC athletes were in action on day one. James Lindsay-Fynn and James Clark won their heat to progress to the semi in the lightweight Fours. Sophie Hosking racing in GBR2 LW2x finished third in her heat and goes to the repechage. Mathilde Pauls, finished second in her heat, beating Andrea Dennis, last year's lightweight single into third place. She therefore moves direct to the semis. Full results are available here.

Munich World Cup, Day 2

An intriguing situation arose in the repechage of the LW2x, GBR2 with Sophie Hosking of London and Laura Greenhalgh lined up alongside GBR1 containing Helen Casey and Hester Goodsell. The progression was the first two crews to go through to the Semis, however this rapidly became academic as the two GBR crews fought it out far ahead of the rest of the field. There was under 1s separating the crews at 500m, 1000m and 1500m with no quarter was being asked or given. However, mindful of the races to come, and with both crews were more than 15s ahead of the field the last 500m showed some let-up of the pace and GBR 2 managed to sneak through to claim the win. The semis and final should prove very interesting. Elsewhere, in the Lightweight pair Rob Williams of London rowing with Beechey of Leander won their heat to progress through to the final. Full results are available here.

Munich World Cup, Finals

The GB lightweight four, containing two LRC members, James Clark and James Lyndsay-Fynn won the Silver medal in the first world cup. As with all the lightweight races the final margins were exceptionally tight with only 1 s covering the first three crews. Although they didn't win it was still a positive start to the season for the crew. James Clark summed it up well; “It took us quite a while to get in our rhythm. This race was a good lesson for the next ones."

In other races Mathilde Pauls was 4th in the women's lightweight single. Rob Williams was 5th in the lightweight pair. Sophie Hoskings was 3rd in the B final of the womens Lightweight Double. Full results are available here.

Wallingford Regatta

Wallingford Regatta was the first 2000m race of the season for London Rowing Club. It provided a good opportunity to assess speeds of crew combinations and consider where London is relative to the club's objectives.

Racing in the morning showed some signs of rustiness and despite good performances by the lightweight coxless four of Finn, Maw, Cawthorne and Hudson, who came 2nd in Senior One, the rest of the results were generally dissappointing.

The afternoons racing was significantly better and while there were no wins, the crews were beginning to put together better race profiles. In the Elite Coxless four event Hayes, Bell, Gilfillan and Kitch, finished 2nd, they were 1/2 L behind a Visitors IV- containing the Searle brothers and two U23 internationals. In the Senior One VIIIs two London crews featured. The lightweights and the heavyweights fought it out to place 2nd and 3rd, just behind a very slick looking TSS VIII and ahead of an Agecroft VIII not dissimmilar to the one that placed 12th at the HoRR. Lastly there were encouraging performances further down the group from the S3 developement VIII, which finished a creditable 3rd in their final.

Next weekend London crews are racing at Gent and Poplar.

Tideway Head of the River 08

The 2008 Head of the River took place in warm conditions with a mild holding headwind. London boated a total of ten VIIIs, a club record, including 8 squad boats and two "recently retired" VIIIs. The pick of the London performances came from LRC IV, the club lightweights. They finished 25th and retained the lightweight pennant for the club.

In the absence of the international lwts the club's first and second VIIIs finished 20th and 21st respectively. These crews were a mixture of Visitors group and club athletes. While these results were disappointing, the presence of 3 London Crews in the top 25 indicated plenty of potential for the summer.

Thanks to all the coaches for hard work put in and to Dulwich College for the Loan of boats.
