What they say about Water Boiling Aft
‘A captivating, beautifully produced story of energetic beginnings and Olympic success, peppered with anecdotes of redoubtable sportsmen and enriched by atmospheric illustrations. Essential for all who cheer the blades.’ – Country Life
‘A triumph, and an adornment to any bookman's shelves. Marvelously well written and 'un-put-downable'.’ — Col. Michael Hickey, author of several military histories
‘It is extraordinarily well written and it shows that the “motherland of rowing” is still on top in our sport with regattas, club life, style, tradition, and many other things which make it so worthwhile to be an oarsman.’ — Rudolf Schader, Miltenberg, Germany
'When the LRC celebrates its first venerated 150 years, it is today's leading rowing journalist and historian, Christopher Dodd, who is holding the pen... His Water Boiling Aft is well-written, has wonderful illustrations, and is a truly stupendous piece of work.' - Göran R Buckhorn in Maritime Life and Traditions, Winter 2006
'During the journey homewards on the train to Holland from the world championships at Eton I read Water Boiling Aft from the first to last page. It has been very, very well written.' — Christiaan Hupkes
'A remarkably researched and written account of the first 150 years of London Rowing Club. A good read.' — Friends of the Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race newsletter, Autumn 2006
'Not only is Water Boiling Aft a "festschrift" for the London Rowing Club and its oarsmen through the years (and, since 2002, oarswomen), but a luminous book of rowing in Britain. Here are the boatbuilders of Tyneside, the 1930s experiment into 'jazz rowing' which meant that two blades were always in the water pulling the boat, and stories about Henley Royal Regatta. But first and foremost, Dodd's book is a grand tribute to The London Rowing Club.' - Göran R Buckhorn in Svensk Rodd No 4, 2006
‘Books written about sporting clubs tend to concentrate more on results tables and past champions than on their histories, but this one is different. Beautifully produced and with a wealth of exceptional illustrations, its excellent text tells a story in great detail… of its sporting achievements, its founders, members and others who, over 150 years, have created a greatly respected rowing club known world-wide.’ — Jim Slade in Wandsworth Historian No 84, 2007
‘Not only has Christopher Dodd written a singular book for rowing enthusiasts, but he has also produced a remarkable piece of Putney’s local history.’ — Jim Slade in Wandsworth Historian No 84, 2007
‘This book is an eminently readable publication for all who are interested in the past, even if they do not have a knowledge of competitive rowing. It is a most enjoyable read for anyone, anytime and anywhere.’ — Jim Slade in Wandsworth Historian No 84 2007
‘The accounts of less successful contributions to rowing theory which London Rowing Club tried, including the idea of syncopated rowing, are fascinating.’ — Peter Crush in Rowing & Regatta, June 2007
‘Dodd succeeds where other writers have failed because this is clearly not just a book about London Rowing Club, but a treatise on the history of rowing as a whole.’ — Peter Crush in Rowing & Regatta, June 2007
‘This is a sumptuous piece of work, lovingly designed and generously adorned with pictures of beautiful Tideway paintings, Leonardo da Vinci-like sketches of early rowing technique, LRC programmes, badges, club photos, Henley races and more. You can easily spend half an hour studying these images. Words and pictures in complete harmony.’ — Peter Crush in Rowing & Regatta, June 2007
‘London Rowing Club has been boiling water aft for more than 150 years, so Christopher Dodd’s history of those years is virtually an encyclopedia of rowing on the tideway, as so many of the club’s members have contributed to the well-being of rowing in general… domestic, national and international rowing have benefited, and the reputations of many events at home and abroad owe much to their support.’ — Keith Osborne in a review to be published in the British Rowing Almanack 2008.
‘The author captures the atmosphere of the Victorian rowing scene in the 1850s very well…’ — Keith Osborne in a review to be published in the British Rowing Almanack 2008.
