London Rowing Club

London Rowing Club was founded in 1856, for the purpose of winning medals at Henley Royal Regatta. This is a tradition that continues to this day, most recently with London winning the Thames Cup in 2006. Since 2004 London has also run a small, but very sucessful, womens squad consisting predominantly of lightweight scullers.

London is a High Peformance Centre for Lightweight Rowing, and has been the base for many sucessful international Lightweights since the inception of the weight class.

With an unrivalled fleet of boats and professional coaching, coupled with a strong club spirit; we aim to be the club of choice for working athletes in London and the South-East.

Met Regatta

Metropolitan Regatta was the next step towards Henley for the 2008 London Rowing Club squad. There was some good racing with established units and some more experimental combinations were tried with mixed results. There were also some good results from our non-Olympic internationals.

In brief, London won the Senior one fours on Saturday in a close race, The four of Kitch, Bell, Gilfillan and Hayes just holding on ahead of Grosvenor and Lea. The Elite fours featured our top club lightweight unit, stroked by 9st 12lb rowing maestro Bart Hudson lining up against Kieran West MBE, former Cambridge Blue and Olympuc gold medallist. In the end Kieran's crew just beat the London into third place, in what was an excellent performance by the lightweights.

The London international rowers, who were not racing in Munich, had a sucessful weekend. Danny Harte, racing the GB LM4x won the Elite Quad both days, Mathilde Pauls and Sophie Hosking won the Elite Quad on Saturday, and Sophie won the Elite Double on Sunday. Stephen Feeney was second in Lightweight Elite 1x.

Lastly a special mention for Alex Woods, newly arrived at London, who stepped in to win in Elite Pairs with Diarmuid Macolgain. Diarmuid's original pairs partner, Mr Herbert Griffin, had sustained an unfortunate knee injury while cross training.

Munich World Cup

Munich World Cup, Day 1

The first day of the Munich World Cup began with very windy conditions making for tough going and slow times. Four LRC athletes were in action on day one. James Lindsay-Fynn and James Clark won their heat to progress to the semi in the lightweight Fours. Sophie Hosking racing in GBR2 LW2x finished third in her heat and goes to the repechage. Mathilde Pauls, finished second in her heat, beating Andrea Dennis, last year's lightweight single into third place. She therefore moves direct to the semis. Full results are available here.

Munich World Cup, Day 2

An intriguing situation arose in the repechage of the LW2x, GBR2 with Sophie Hosking of London and Laura Greenhalgh lined up alongside GBR1 containing Helen Casey and Hester Goodsell. The progression was the first two crews to go through to the Semis, however this rapidly became academic as the two GBR crews fought it out far ahead of the rest of the field. There was under 1s separating the crews at 500m, 1000m and 1500m with no quarter was being asked or given. However, mindful of the races to come, and with both crews were more than 15s ahead of the field the last 500m showed some let-up of the pace and GBR 2 managed to sneak through to claim the win. The semis and final should prove very interesting. Elsewhere, in the Lightweight pair Rob Williams of London rowing with Beechey of Leander won their heat to progress through to the final. Full results are available here.

Munich World Cup, Finals

The GB lightweight four, containing two LRC members, James Clark and James Lyndsay-Fynn won the Silver medal in the first world cup. As with all the lightweight races the final margins were exceptionally tight with only 1 s covering the first three crews. Although they didn't win it was still a positive start to the season for the crew. James Clark summed it up well; “It took us quite a while to get in our rhythm. This race was a good lesson for the next ones."

In other races Mathilde Pauls was 4th in the women's lightweight single. Rob Williams was 5th in the lightweight pair. Sophie Hoskings was 3rd in the B final of the womens Lightweight Double. Full results are available here.

Five London Rowers to Race at Munich

Two London rowers, James Lindsay-Fynn and James Clark are named in the Lightweight Four for the first World Cup in Munich. James and James were both members of the lightweight four that won Gold at the World Championships at Munich in September. They will be looking to continue the winning pattern as they begin the final part of their journey to Bejing.

Sophie Hosking, new to London this year, is racing in one of two Lightweight Women's Doubles at Munich, a sign of the continued close competition for the Olympic places. Sophie is the daughter of Dave Hosking, who stroked in the gold medal winning 1980 Lightweight VIII that was based out of London.

In the non-Olympic boats, Rob Williams is selected to race in the Lightweight pair. Rob was very close this year earning a place in the four. He and Matt Beechey (Leander) should be a combination to watch. Mathilde Pauls is racing in the LW1x and Danny Harte will be racing later in the season in the respective Lightweight Quads event.

Good Luck to all of the London Rowers, Bang the Drum!
